Sam Dalby RP, CBPP
Expert tutor
Sam is a figurative painter based in Moffat, Scotland.
It was during foundational studies at Harrogate that great stock was put in the value of drawing and painting from life, whether figures or interiors. The emphasis was always on drawing as an interrogative tool, albeit one that worked in concert with imagination, and could be weilded with spontaneity.
This formed the basis from which all of his subsequent work has been built, and he often returns to the fundamentals he learned there.
Sam has exhibited widely, including the National Portrait Gallery, The Mall Galleries, and Glasgow Art Club.
Having exhibited with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters at the Mall Galleries since 2009 he was elected a member of the RP in 2013.
At the Scottish Portrait Awards in 2022 he won First Prize for his painting ‘Meeting Daniel’ and he won the Almenara Prize at the 2026 Royal Society of Portrait Painters Exhibition for his self portrait.
