About the Workshop & Tutor

Sarah is a figurative painter based in London, is Director of the Portrait Painting Diploma at The Heatherleys School of Fine Art and is Chair of the Contemporary British portrait painters. She has exhibited widely across the UK including the National Portrait Gallery as well as internationally. You can find out more about Sarah here.

This five day intensive offers an opportunity to explore Sarah Jane’s approach to portrait painting, learn about her artistic practice and develop your own skills in drawing, colour mixing and painting from life.

Day 1 will begin with an introduction to Sarah Jane’s work, practice and painting process, followed by drawing exercises to explore the pose and establish compositions for a painting.

Day 2 will focus on colour studies in oil, with an emphasis on colour mixing and exploring the possibilities of the split primary palette.

Days 3–5 will be dedicated to developing a larger painting from a single pose, allowing participants to put the skills and ideas explored earlier in the week into practice. Throughout the workshop, Sarah Jane will share insights into her working methods, offering guidance on drawing, colour, composition and the development of a painting from initial observation through to a more resolved work.

The workshop is particularly suited to painters who want to deepen their understanding of colour and develop confidence in mixing and applying paint, while gaining insight into the process of an established contemporary portrait painter.

As with all taught sessions, this course is more about learning that can be integrated into practice rather than on getting a finished portrait. It's more about succumbing to being a student and being open to discourse, intervention, and learning, so we can then make informed choices about what is useful to us and incorporate into regular practice.
