This immersive five-day portrait painting course is designed for artists who want to strengthen their ability to observe, draw, and paint the human face with confidence and intention. Working from a live model throughout the week, students will explore both quick decision-making and sustained, layered approaches to portraiture.
The course begins with a full day dedicated to drawing with paint, focusing on proportion, structure, and capturing likeness. students will develop a strong foundation for blocking in a portrait accurately.
On day two, students will complete an alla prima (wet-into-wet) portrait painting in a single session. This day emphasizes colour mixing, value relationships, and working decisively to capture form and character efficiently.
The remaining three days are devoted to a long-pose portrait painting, allowing students to slow down and refine their work over multiple sessions. Emphasis will be placed on developing form, edges, color harmony, and subtle adjustments that bring depth and life to the portrait.
Individual feedback will support each artist’s process throughout the course. This workshop is suitable for painters with some prior experience who want to deepen their portrait practice with oils. Students will leave with a clearer understanding of portrait structure and stronger observational skills.
As with all taught sessions, this course is more about learning that can be integrated into practice rather than on getting results and showing that which we can already do. Learning to record the most useful information about our subject, discovering something about seeing the structure of the head. Learning ways of describing. It's more about succumbing to being a student and being open to discourse, intervention, and learning, so we can then make informed choices about what is useful to us and incorporate into regular practice.
