About the Course & Tutor
This free weekend portrait course is open to anyone living in the Parish of Zennor or immediately around its boarders, anyone working in Zennor, anyone involved in the Zennor Pantomime, anyone who spends copious amounts of time each week at the Tinners, and anyone regularly attending Zennor Church. No previous experience is necessary so it’s ok to come if you haven’t picked up a pencil since at school. It’s also a useful weekend for anyone who is creative but has had time out from practicing or those who paint but have not tried portraiture. Even those with significant portrait experience will find the weekend useful.
We will commence on Saturday morning with Rose leading some drawing exercises to help you free up and to aid your hand-eye coordination. Followed by a little information about the anatomy of the head, then some longer exercises that involve measuring. something folk often avoid but is essential. Many of you will likely have met Rose when she was badgering you to sign up for sitting for your Portrait to be painted. You can find out more about Rose here.
Then Tim will be taking the reigns for the rest of the weekend, with Rose supporting. Some of you who are regular Portrait Artist Of The Year watchers may recognise Tim from 2023 where he painted Lucian freud’s neice, Emma Freud. Or you might know him or re cognise him as he lives locally in Penzance. You can find out more about Tim here.
Tim will be showing those of you who are interested how to utilise the Camera Lucida App (which you will need to pay £14 and some pennies to download on to your iPhone or another app if android). It allows being able to make photos semitransparent in order to be able to trace around them onto the ground (board/canvas/paper0 so that an exact likeness is drawn to start off with.
This will then be followed by Tim going into detail sharing his own methodical process of colour mixing and controlling tonal value with greys.
The course will be a comprehensive look at Portrait Painting in oils that is suitable for any level of experience, with primary focus being on teaching the techniques to those who are beginners/new to oils and/or portraiture, with those with some already gained experience being able to dip into demonstrations to revisit tuition, or being tutored individually. The course will be tailored to those who sign up for it.
