About the Workshop & Tutor
Owain is currently showing at the National Portrait Gallery in the Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer Award annual (2025) exhibition as well as being a member of the Contemporary British Portrait Painters who have an annual exhibition each summer in Brixton, and is a regular showing at the Mall Galleries with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and other well known societies. He approaches portraiture as a vehicle for exploring human connection and temporal experience. You can find out more about Owain here.
The course is suitable for those with an intermediate or advanced level of experience of working in oils and working from the figure/portrait. It will primarily be an introduction into Owain’s own methods, techniques and materials for painting in oils. Over the course of the seven days he will be painting alongside us giving practical demonstrations of his process.
There will be the same two models sitting for us throughout the 7 days in separate environments, and participants can choose to paint a portrait/half figure/full figure, considering size, scale and composition.
There will be an emphasis on brushwork, with Owain sharing how he creates form and texture with his often swirling brush strokes. As always there be will be due attention given to tone and colour mixing, with a focus on the palette that Owain uses.
As well as Owain sharing his technique with us there will be an anticipation that each student can take something from how he paints and adapt it to their own way of working.
