About THE WORKSHOP & TUTOR

As well as being a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters Simon divides his time between his portrait portrait painting and comic book illustration for the cult British comic 2000 AD. His fully painted work for the title has been collected into numerous books worldwide and he believes that the discipline of his comic-strip work complements his oil painting, allowing him to produce dynamic images in an economical way. You can find out more about Simon here.

During the course we will have a different model each day, to allow exploration of different body mass, posture and form. Some are bald, some fairly skinny, some are voluptuous and some dainty. We will aim to give a variety.

So we will be producing a painting/painting sketch each day of a different sitter in a different pose.

There will be considerable attention given to exploring composition as this should never be underestimated and often makes a painting.

We will be working with a limited palette with focus on colour/tone, colour mixing, and indeed brushwork.

With the full nude figure there will still be the consideration of likeness and learning to record the most useful information about our subject.

As with all taught sessions, this course is more about learning that can be integrated into practice rather than on getting immediate results and showing that which we can already do.

It's more about succumbing to being a student and being open to discourse, intervention, and learning, so we can then make informed choices about what is useful to us and incorporate into our regular practice.
