About the Workshop & Tutor

Mick is a figurative painter who has exhibited widely in the UK including at the National Portrait Gallery. For a number of years now he has regularly taught life-drawing and portrait painting, and organises his own workshops for international artists, as an extension to his artistic practise. You can find out more about Mick here.

This immersive five-day portrait painting course is designed for artists who want to strengthen their ability to observe, draw, and paint the human face with confidence and intention. Working from a live models throughout the week, students will utilise fundamental skill sets for working from the models and enhance the observational skills required to do that. Along with short and medium length demonstrations, there’ll be continuous one-to-one support, pushing students’ work as far as possible over the five days.

The course begins with a full day dedicated to drawing, with an emphasis on proportion, structure, and capturing likeness. After a series of drawing exercises, accompanied with demonstrations, students will develop a resolved charcoal drawing. The day continues with drawing in paint.

Day two begins with a colour study demonstration. Before being undertaken by the group, some time will be spent making compositional studies.

The remaining three days will be devoted to a long-pose portrait painting, allowing students to slow down and refine their work over multiple sessions. Emphasis will be placed on the drawing, developing form, edges, color harmony, and subtle adjustments that bring depth and life to the portrait.

Individual feedback will support each artist’s process throughout the course.

As with all taught sessions, this course is more about learning that can be integrated into practice rather than on getting a finished portrait. It's more about succumbing to being a student and being open to discourse, intervention, and learning, so we can then make informed choices about what is useful to us and incorporate into regular practice.
