About the Workshop & Tutor
Those of you who are regular PAOTY watchers will recognise Katie from her incredible journey in 2025, reaching the final (though we thought she would win!). Her incredible speed of working in such detail and with such likeness and colour accuracy, it was thrilling to watch.
Katie has a lot of experience teaching a range of people including delivering courses for those with lived experience of mental health. We are delighted that Katie has joined our faculty.

Under my Katie’s guidance, you will receive step-by-step instruction where she will introduce how she approaches working with the grid method and water-mixable oils. We will begin by drawing out the portrait in pencil first, all working from the same photo reference, followed by a demonstration of how to mix realistic skin tones and apply them to your portrait drawing.
The workshop is suitable for all experience levels. No previous painting experience is necessary, and all materials are included. This is a relaxed, non-judgemental workshop. Everyone will paint at different speeds with some completing a full portrait by the end of the day and others completing just some features of the face, and all portraits will look different. Bringing your own style to the portrait is what makes it yours. It is easy to compare your work to others, but remember, art is totally subjective and there is no one way to paint a portrait. By showing you how Katie approaches painting a portrait, we hope to provide a foundation for you to develop your own style and process moving forward.
As with all taught sessions, this course is more about learning that can be integrated into practice rather than on getting a finished portrait. It's more about succumbing to being a student and being open to discourse, intervention, and learning, so we can then make informed choices about what is useful to us and incorporate into regular practice.
What is provided?
All equipment, grounds, and materials are provided. A selection of teas and coffee, organic milk and plant based milk, plus a selection of treats will also be available.
