About the Workshop & Tutor
Antony is the current Vice President of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and a member of the New English Art Club, and the Contemporary British Portrait Painters. You can find out more about Antony here.
This ten day egg tempera intensive is an incredible opportunity to go into more depth in portrait painting in egg tempera techniques, where Antony will be sharing his approach, but also will allow time to explore other elements.
Please note that Antony will be teaching full days on days on days 1, 2, 5, 8 and 10, and will be teaching in the mornings of days 3, 4, 6, 7 and 9. We can either stay on and continue to paint in the afternoons where Antony is not teaching, or we can decided to take the entire afternoon or part of it off to either conserve our energy or if visiting Cornwall then maybe to explore the area.
It is anticipated that many will have attended the introduction in 2026 or have done some egg tempura before, however Antony can go through the preparation of the egg tempura and pigments for those that need.
We will spend time exploring composition and there will be opportunity to consider including plants, toys and parts of the room, skirting, etc.
Antony will continually teach through demonstration including transferring initial drawings to a panel on which the egg tempera underpainting will be developed . We will continue to work from the models exploring techniques used for painting the nuances of skin in egg tempera, as well as looking at how to paint other surface textures of inanimate objects, clothing and room interior.
As with all courses the focus is on picking up techniques egg tempura and learning about other factors such as composition, colour mixing etc in order to take them away and incorporate some of those that speak to us into our own practice. We need to be open to intervention and take accountability for that which we invest into a course and that which we get out of it. It’s not about coming along to show that which we can already do.
It may be we will not complete our portraits/paintings as this is not the aim of the course. It is more important to to develop an area of a painting perhaps and learn as much of the techniques being taught.
