About the Workshop & Tutor
Antony is the current Vice President of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and a member of the New English Art Club, and the Contemporary British Portrait Painters. You can find out more about Antony here.
The three day egg tempera course will focus on Antony’s approach to painting a portrait in egg tempera, and will be an introduction to the egg tempera technique.
We will start with the preparation of the egg tempera, and how it's combined with the pigments . Then Antony will demonstrate through a step by step process how an egg tempera painting is created, including the techniques he uses to paint a portrait in egg tempera.
Day one will start with a portrait drawing made from the model in either pencil or charcoal . This drawing is then transferred to a panel , on which the egg tempera underpainting will be developed . After this we will continue to work from the models to develop an egg tempera portrait over the three days, with an emphasis on the techniques used for painting the nuances of skin in egg tempera.
Many of us will not complete our portraits as this is not the aim of the course, and this technique takes a lot of time. It is more important to to develop an area of a painting perhaps and learn as much of the techniques being taught in order to take away and develop and incorporate some into our own practice.
Antony will be returning in 2027 with a longer and more in depth course to include portraiture, still life set ups, and considered compositions and to further develop egg tempura practice and technique.
